Danish Biometrics and Copenhagen Hospital Corporation in strategic joint venture

Danish Biometrics enters into an agreement with Copenhagen Hospital Corporation about testing, research and development on biometric recognition.

Biometric recognition is a science and technology for authentication (identification/ verification) of a human being based on the human beings own (unchangeable) physiological or behavioural characteristics (e.g. fingerprint, iris, gait or DNA). Many experts consider Biometrics to be the most innovative IT-technology in the last decade.

The objective of the agreement is to result in solutions for secure log-on procedures when doctors and nurses for instance are entering the Electronic Patient Records (EPR) as part of their daily routines.

High security needs (tracking) and privacy rules are required as EPR contains information about health which is regarded as Sentitive Personal Data. At the same time hospital staff must have quick and effective access to the case record and the patient data which are needed due to the treatment.

Biometrics is an approach to solve both challenges at the same time. An operation which can be perfomed within 1-2 seconds with the use of a single finger touch, iris scanning or maybe another biometric option would provide an advantage for the staff. Simultaneously the process ensures access to the right person as the biometric identifier is unique between individuals.

An important part of the solution would be to integrate biometrics into existing IT Architecture with Single Sign On (SSO) and demand for convergence. The joint venture is to be continued after 1th January 2007 within the responsibility of the new Region Hovedstaden as stipulated in the agreement.

” I am very enthusiastic about the joint venture between Danish Biometrics and such a huge and important Organization as Hovedstadens Sygehusfællesskab”, says Director Frederik Kortbæk, Chairman of the Board of Danish Biometrics. “ It’s a great challenge for us and we and our co-partners will indeed live up to the confidence that H:S has shown to us quite visionary.

The project involves the biggest pilots and further research on biometrics ever seen in Denmark before and has interesting international perspectives as to EPR.

On sight a biometric log-on system could be extended to other parts of the Health Care System, e.g. homecare service, general practitioners, pharmacies and last not least in relation to each individual patient for the use of a multi-service smart card with the biometric data of each individual stored in the microchip.

I am aware of that the EU Commission already has shown interest in the joint-venture and it´s potential. I have the strongest opinion that Danish Biometrics is a unique Organization of Universities and private companies, who will be able to complete this exciting task successfully and the Consortium is ready to contribute to the Danish dream of creating a super system for hospitals in international context as far as for example security in EPR is concerned”.

Danish Biometrics og Hovedstadens Sygehusfællesskab i strategisk samarbejde

Danish Biometrics og Hovedstadens Sygehusfællesskab i strategisk samarbejde. Danish Biometrics har indgået en samarbejdsaftale med Hovedstadens Sygehusfællesskab om testning, udvikling og forskning i biometrisk genkendelse.

Biometrisk genkendelse er en videnskab og teknologi til autentificering (identifikation/verifikation) af et menneske, baseret på menneskets egne (uforanderlige) fysiologiske eller adfærdsmæssige karakteristika (f.eks. fingeraftryk, iris, gangart, dna). Biometri betragtes af mange eksperter som den mest innovative IT-teknologi i verden i de sidste ti år.

Målet med aftalen er at føre frem til løsninger for en sikker procedure når læger og sygeplejersker som en del af deres arbejde skal have adgang til for eksempel de elektroniske patientjournaler (EPJ).

Da den elektroniske patientjournal indeholder oplysninger om helbredsforhold, der er personfølsomme data, er kravene til sikkerhed (sporbarhed) og privacy store. Samtidig skal personalet hurtigt og effektivt kunne få adgang til journalen og til de patientdata, som er nødvendige af hensyn til behandlingen.

Biometri er et bud på at få løst udfordringen på en gang. En funktion som kan udføres på et par sekunder med anvendelse af et fingeraftryk, en iris-scanning eller en helt tredje biometrisk genkendelse vil alt andet lige være en fordel for sygehuspersonalet. Samtidig kan det sikres , at den der har logget på, også er den der har haft ret hertil, eftersom den biometriske kode er unik for hvert eneste menneske.

En vigtig del af aftalen består i at se på om man kan integrere biometri i den eksisterende it-arkitektur med Single Sign On (SSO) og krav om konvergens. Samarbejdsaftalen indeholder en klausul om, at den kan fortsætte efter 1.1. 2007 i regi af den nye Region Hovedstaden.

Direktør Frederik Kortbæk, bestyrelsesformand i Danish Biometrics, udtaler i forbindelse med aftalen: ”Jeg er på konsortiets vegne utrolig glad for den indgåede joint venture-aftale med en så stor organisation som H:S. Det er en stor udfordring for os og vi og vore samarbejdspartnere vil leve op til den tillid som H:S visionært viser os. Selve projektet rummer de største pilotprojekter og yderligere forskning af biometri endnu set i Danmark og vil i relation til EPJ have interessante internationale perspektiver.

På sigt vil et biometrisk log-on system kunne udbygges til andre dele af sundhedsvæsenet, f.eks. hjemmeplejen, de praktiserende læger, apoteker og sidst men ikke mindst i forhold til den enkelte patient i form af et borgerservice smart card med den enkeltes biometriske data gemt i microchippen.

Jeg er bekendt med at bl. a. EU Kommissionen allerede har vist interesse for samarbejdsaftalen og det potentiale den rummer. Det er min opfattelse, at vi med Danish Biometrics har skabt en unik organisation af universiteter og virksomheder, som vil være i stand til at løfte denne spændende opgave og konsortiet er parat til at bidrage til Danmarks drøm om at skabe et i internationalt sammenhæng supersystem til sygehus for så vidt angår sikkerheden i eksempelvis EPJ.”

Danish biometrics and Fraunhofer Institute IGD in cooperation

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is the largest organization for applied research in Europe as it maintains roughly 80 research units, including 58 Fraunhofer Institutes, at over 40 different locations throughout Germany. A staff of some 12,500, predominantly qualified scientists and engineers, works with an annual research budget of over one billion euros. Of this sum, more than € 900 million is generated through contract research. Roughly two thirds of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s contract research revenue is derived from contracts with industry and from publicly financed research projects. The remaining one third is contributed by the German federal and Länder governments, partly as a means of enabling the institutes to pursue more fundamental research in areas that are likely to become relevant to industry and society in five or ten years’ time.

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is also active on an international level: Affiliated research centers and representative offices in Europe, the USA and Asia provide contact with the regions of greatest importance to present and future scientific progress and economic development

Danish Biometrics and Fraunhofer Institute IGD in Darmstadt have launched a closer cooperation with special reference to further international research and development on biometrics.  Focus will be on pending projects in Denmark and new upcoming projects with the participation of Danish Biometrics, Fraunhofer Institute IGD and other international partners in a joint consortium.

Fraunhofer Institute IGD, the department Security Technology has been working on evaluation of biometric recognition since 1998. It also examines possible threats to biometrical methods and system security.  The institute has been involved in several EU projects for instance BioFace and BioFinger. The current EU 3D face project was launched in 2005 mainly on the basis of research of Fraunhofer Institute IGD. Other Fraunhofer Institutes are participating in EU research projects on biometrics too, as for example Fraunhofer Institute IAO in Stuttgart as member of the HUMABIO consortium which Danish Biometrics is affiliated to as well. It may be said that The Fraunhofer-Gesellshaft is the most important biometric research organisation in Europe and probable in the world today.

The partnership with Fraunhofer Institute IGD is of extraordinary significance to Danish Biometrics and will without doubt cement the position of the consortium as to the participation of upcoming EU initiatives on ID management and biometric in the near future.

Danish Biometrics er blevet medlem af IAPP

IAPP – International Association of Privacy Professionals – er verdens største privacy organisation og repræsenterer over 2600 privacy professionelle i private og offentlige virksomheder og universiteter fra 23 lande. IAPP kan tilbyde den mest omfattende privacy viden og ressourcer med bl.a. KnowledgeNet netværk, daglig privacy nyhedstjeneste, konferencer samt et udviklet ”Certified Information Privacy Professional” akkreditiv program.

IAPP´s mission er at skabe et forum for diskussion og debat om emner med henblik på udvikling og vedligeholdelse af privacy programmer og policies i virksomheder.

Blandt medlemmerne af IAPP tæller American Express, Bank of America, Deloitte, Eli Lilly, General Electric, Hewlett-Packard Company, IBM, Intel, KPMG, Manpower, Marriott, Microsoft, Pfizer, Sun Microsystems, Symantec, T- Mobile, University of Pennsylvania, Wallmart samt Wells Fargo Co.

Privacy er et komplekst begreb som ikke relaterer sig til vare-tagelsen af en enkelt interesse, men har derimod adskillige dimensioner. I bred forstand kan privacy betragtes som retten til personlig integritet og selvbestemmelse.

Biometriske løsninger og produkter skal efter Danish Biometrics opfattelse leve op til meget høje krav til privacy i sammenhæng med etiske og sociale aspekter. Kun herved kan teknologien skabe den tryghed og opnå den tillid i samfundet og hos hvert enkelt individ som er en forudsætning for en hensigtsmæssig implementering.

Danish Biometrics ser det derfor som ikke alene nødvendigt men også gavnligt at være med i netværk og fora med henblik på at deltage i og præge debatten om privacy. Men derudover ønsker Danish Biometrics også at være initiativtager til diverse aktiviteter og projekter med det formål at udvikle specifikke privacy løsninger med relation til biometri.

Det er derfor oplagt for Danish Biometrics at kunne tilslutte sig IAPP og konsortiet ser med begejstring frem til et meget spændende og frugtbart samarbejde med IAPP, som med sin verdensomspændende organisation og store kapacitet, vil kunne styrke Danish Biometrics privacy profil.
